Terms of Use

Short sections in plain language. Overset is free, your work stays yours, and the checks help — they don’t replace a look at the game.

Updated 11 October 2026 · Applies to Overset 1.5.0

The short version
  • Free to use, including for paid client work. Don’t resell or redistribute it.
  • Your projects and files are yours; Overset processes them on your device and I never receive them.
  • Google, Claude and the services you connect have their own terms. They run on your keys and accounts, so their costs and actions are yours.
  • The checks are aids, not guarantees. Keep backups — I can’t recover projects I never had.

01The agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and Alp Yalay, the independent developer of Overset, based in Istanbul, Türkiye (“I”, “me”). They apply to the Overset browser extension for Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox, the Overset web app, and this website (together, “Overset”). By installing or using Overset you accept them. If you use it for a company or a client, you confirm you can accept them on its behalf.

How your data is handled is described in the Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms.

02Your licence

Overset is free. I grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it for any lawful purpose, including paid translation, review and localization work for clients. You may install it on as many of your own devices and browser profiles as you like.

You may not:

  • sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute Overset, or a modified copy of it, including republishing it in an extension store;
  • remove or alter its copyright, licence or attribution notices;
  • use it to break the law, or to infringe anyone’s copyright, trade secrets or confidentiality obligations;
  • interfere with the services it connects to, or use it to get around their limits or terms (for example, by sharing a token or key that isn’t yours).

Overset and its name, mark and code remain mine; these terms give you a right to use it, not ownership. Rights not granted here are reserved, except where the law gives them to you anyway.

03Your content stays yours

Your projects, translations, glossaries, notes, memories, fonts and files belong to you or to whoever you are working for. Overset processes them on your device and I never receive them, so I claim no rights to them. When you connect a service, what you send it is covered by your agreement with that service.

You are responsible for having the right to use what you load — including game text under NDA and any game font you upload to measure text — and for keeping client work confidential. For confidential projects, turn on the project’s Confidential switch so Claude and DeepL are off.

04Google, Claude and the services you connect

Overset can read Google Sheets you open, can send text to Anthropic’s Claude when you ask it to, and — if you set them up — can connect to Google (to write cells), GitHub, Crowdin, Weblate, DeepL and Discord. Those are third-party services with their own terms, and your use of them is between you and them.

  • Claude, DeepL and the other connections use your own keys, tokens and accounts. You are responsible for keeping them safe, for what is sent with them, and for any charges or limits those services apply.
  • Connections only ever do what you ask: writing cells to a sheet, writing files into a game folder, opening a pull request or an issue, pushing translations, posting to a channel. You are responsible for those actions and for having the right to take them — including write access to the sheet, repository, project or game, and the permission of whoever owns it. Review what Overset is about to send before you confirm it.
  • Writing into a game folder replaces files there. Overset copies each file it replaces into a .overset-backup folder first, but keep your own backups of anything you can’t afford to lose.
  • Overset is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Anthropic, GitHub, Crowdin, Weblate, DeepL or Discord. Their names and products are trademarks of their respective owners.

05What the checks promise

Overset’s checks, fit measurements, build comparisons and suggestions are aids for a translator’s judgement, not a guarantee that a translation is correct or will display correctly. Measurements depend on the boxes, limits and fonts you set up, and a game engine can render text differently from a browser. Always check your text in the game before release.

Claude and DeepL can be wrong. Review anything they produce before you use it; you are responsible for what you deliver.

06Keep backups

Your projects live in your browser’s storage, which can be lost — by clearing site data, uninstalling the extension, a browser problem, or a lost device. Overset reminds you to back up, and Export → Backup saves a copy. I never hold your projects, so I cannot recover them for you.

07Updates and availability

I may update Overset, change or remove features, or stop offering it. Extension stores install updates automatically unless you turn that off. Support is offered through the support page on a best-effort basis, without a guaranteed response time.

08No warranty

To the extent the law allows, Overset is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. I don’t promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free or compatible with every file, sheet or game.

09Limits of liability

To the extent the law allows, I am not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, revenue, data, goodwill or work, arising from your use of Overset or inability to use it — including losses from a translation that shipped with an error a check did not catch, or from a write to a sheet, repository, project or game folder that you confirmed. My total liability for any claim relating to Overset is limited to US$50.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence, and nothing affects rights you have as a consumer under the mandatory laws of the country where you live.

10Ending this agreement

You can stop using Overset at any time by uninstalling it or closing the web app; your data stays wherever you saved it. Your licence ends automatically if you break these terms. The sections on your content, warranties, liability and governing law continue after that.

11Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Türkiye, and the courts and enforcement offices of Istanbul have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and may bring a claim in its courts.

12Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date, and material changes will be noted in the changelog. Continuing to use Overset after a change means you accept the new terms; if you don’t, stop using it.
